Abstract

This article aims to oppose two contrary but simultaneous ways of approaching the narrative: from what is exposed and from what is not revealed. In Der Geisterseher (The Ghost-Seer), published between 1787 and 1789 in the magazine Thalia, Friedrich Schiller wants to show us how the mysterious obeys nothing more than fallacious tricks that self-interestedly seek to obfuscate reason. To do this, anticipating its thematization, it relies on the opposition made by current narratology between histoire and discours. Accordingly, it differentiates that knowledge that is within the reach of the protagonist from that which is accessible to the narrator, the reader and the author, maintaining the doubt of whether the author knows everything. On the other hand, Schiller, claiming the lights of reason against the darkness, indirectly alludes to the religious-political struggle that was ongoing in his time in the Duchy of Württemberg. In addition, a certain increase of sensitivity is perceived in him to understand that assuming enlightenment is not only based on rational thought but also on the mental strength to live it. Also, in the Philosophical Essay inserted in the work he advances the approach he will make to Kant's thought from 1791 onwards.
