The interest in mathematical research in early childhood education has grown considerably in the last decade. The emergence of international research groups, such as the Early Years Mathematics Groups of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education, or in a national level, the group Investigación en Educación Matemática Infantil de la Sociedad Española de Investigación en Educación Matemática are evidences of the importance that is taking this area of research. The studies presented in these working groups are different because of the particularities of each context: the curriculums, the curricula, the types of centers, the methodological frameworks and the interests. In this article we focus on the most relevant contributions related with games and mathematics learning in early childhood education, while we show the emergence and consolidation of an area of recent research in mathematics education.
