The printing in 1554 of the Traité des hérétiques by lyonese Jean Pidié after the death of Servetus

Abstract

After the death of Miguel Servet and Calvin’s justification, a Latin choral work was printed on tolerance and about whether to persecute heretics. We suggest that the promoter and main author of the work, Martin Bellius, is not Sébastien Castellio but Martín Borrhaus, Cellarius. The printing office of the French version, the Traité des hérétiques of 1554, was unknown. This article analyzes this edition and affirm that the printer was Jean Pidié in Lyon, identified by his capital letters. This printer worked in those years with booksellers and printers of Servet circle, as Arnoullet and Frellon among others. We add in this article a new Latin poetry by Servet, dedicated to Erasmus, printed by the Trechsel brothers in Lyon in 1533.
