It is proposed an exhaustive analysis of Catoblepas in antiquity. For this purpose, we will review and study each of the main textual sources of the period. The search for correspondences in the current African fauna will make it possible to formulate one conclusion: behind a tale of fanciful appearance, it is a possible description of a biological reality well known today: the malignant catarrhal fever typical of gnus, among others.
