Somatotropina bovina recombinante (rBST): El ocaso de una nueva tecnología creada en EEUU

Se intenta seguir los acontecimientos desde el 2000 en EEUU, que sugieren las causas del fracaso en la utilización de la rBST (Posilac). El texto repasa tasa de utilización, incidencias políticas, legales y mediáticas, efectos de la utilización en producción de leche y en salud animal, impacto del consumo de leche, lácteos y carne de animales tratados en la salud humana, papel del etiquetado de la leche de vacas tratadas para el consumidor e impacto medioambiental.
Frente a la firme posición favorable de la FDA, la presión de los consumidores, el apoyo de la industria láctea y la distribución desde 2007, expresado en el etiquetado de la leche y sus productos (“rBST Free”), llevó al ocaso la nueva tecnología. La postura de los consumidores se basó fundamentalmente en sus reservas frente a la rBST en salud del consumidor, bienestar animal y salud animal.
