Este ensayo explora la influencia perdurable de San Agustín de Hipona en el cristianismo occidental, contextualizada en el marco del 1700 aniversario del Concilio de Nicea (325–2025). La teología de Agustín, moldeada por sus encuentros con el maniqueísmo, el platonismo y la ortodoxia cristiana, proporcionó principios fundamentales para la Compañía de Jesús (Jesuitas), fundada en 1540. El ensayo examina las doctrinas agustinianas de la gracia, el pecado original y la teología sacramental, las cuales resuenan con la afirmación del Credo Niceno sobre la divinidad de Cristo y la universalidad de la Iglesia. Asimismo, investiga la dependencia de los jesuitas en teólogos cristianos primitivos como Ignacio de Antioquía, Orígenes y Tertuliano, cuyos énfasis en la disciplina espiritual, el rigor intelectual y la apologética informaron la espiritualidad y la misión jesuita. Al rastrear estas raíces teológicas, el ensayo sostiene que el enfoque práctico e introspectivo de Agustín, combinado con el celo misionero y erudito de otras figuras patrísticas, dio forma al papel de los jesuitas en la Contrarreforma y más allá.
