Abstract

For several decades the transport sector has been a major contributor to increased emissions of air pollutants and noise. The transport is, along with industry, the sectors with the greatest energy consumption and a strong dependence on non-renewable energy resources. In Portugal the energy consumption of the transport sector is nearly 42% of the final energy consumption in the country, data from 2016 (Pordata, 2019). The most polluting mode of transport (in absolute terms) is road transport by cars/trucks/buses, followed by air, sea / river and, finally, train. In Portugal, road transport contributes for more than 23.5% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
