The purpose of this article is to analyze the conditions of the workers involved in the construction of the main line of the Northern Spanish Railway. To this end, the contemporary and period bibliography is reviewed and, as a contribution to other studies, an exhaustive review of the company's internal documents is carried out. The findings of the research highlight that the railroad intended to organize the work through different models sufficiently tested. By discussing how labor relations were implemented, the conclusions mean that the company's decision to make great savings in the railroad's elevation was transferred to problems that interfered with and increased the cost of the development of the works.
