José Eugenio Ribera (1864-1936) led a very busy life as civil engineer, public works entrepreneur, railway developer and professor at the School of Civil Engineering. All those pursuits entailed membership on official committees, attendance at conferences, business travel, participation in visiting scholar programmes and tourism. As entrepreneur and pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete, he publicised his own system in several countries. One of the objectives was to exchange information, and although he deemed travel abroad necessary for first-hand information on the most recent and significant works, he also believed that Spanish engineering should be acknowledged internationally for its excellence and technological developments.
