About the Journal

TST – Transportes, Servicios y Telecomunicaciones (E-ISSN 2951-7176; ISSN 1578-5777) is a scientific journal founded by the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles in 2001, and which, since 2016, has been published by the Iberian Association of Railway History by virtue of an agreement signed by both institutions. TST has thrice a year: January, March and October. The issue of January is monographic.

In 2022 it is integrated into the Portal of digital journals of the University of Valladolid. Previous issues are accessible on the following web pages: TST - Transportes, Servicios y Telecomunicaciones and Dialnet.

Its main purpose lies in the publication of historical research on the tertiary sector. The magazine publishes works on the origin and evolution of services such as railway, naval, air and road transport, retail and wholesale trade, banking, water, gas and electricity supply, communications, education, and health, among others. Research in recent decades has highlighted the importance of these activities in economic development, as well as their notable contribution to GDP. The Industrial Revolution and Industrialization could not be understood without them. No period is excluded, although most of the investigations are in the Modern Age.

TST also welcomes articles with other focuses beyond business and economic history. Firstly, social history research (e.g., trade unionism, working conditions, gender studies, urban history, and historical anthropology) is welcomed by TST. We also publish articles on the history of science and technology, economic thought, political history, cultural history, and historical heritage. We also welcome works of an interdisciplinary nature, or that use novel methodologies. In short, no subject is, in principle, excluded; but it is essential that three conditions are met: first, the works must deal with some of the activities carried out in the tertiary sector; second, its perspective must be historical; and third, the papers must be original and must not be in the process of being reviewed in other scientific journals.

TST has a clear international vocation. The magazine is published by a Spanish-Portuguese entity, the Iberian Association of Railway History, which means that works on the Portuguese economy and society are equally appreciated as those about the Spanish economy and society. We are also especially interested in publishing works on the cultural sphere to which the two Iberian countries belong, and on which they are projected: Europe and Latin America. In short, TST does not set limits to the publication of works from any geographical area, provided that the conditions regarding originality, perspective and historical methodology are met.

TST is published in Spanish (as well as in the other legally recognized languages in Spain), Portuguese, English, French and Italian. In any case, the writing quality must be perfect, so the text must have been written or proofread by a native speaker.

TST is made up of a miscellaneous section of research articles and is open to the possibility of including thematic issues. It also has two sections of original reviews of recent books and classic works. Proposals for research articles are evaluated using the double-blind peer-review method. The articles include titles, abstracts, keywords in the language of the article, Spanish, Portuguese, and English, as well as the name(s) of the authors (hereinafter, the Author), their academic category and institutional affiliation. The reviews are evaluated by the Editorial Board of the magazine.

TST’s Editorial Board and Advisory Board are made up of members from various Portuguese, Spanish and foreign universities. 90% of the Editorial Board is made up of members belonging to institutions outside the publishing institution (the University of Valladolid). As for the Advisory Council, all its members belong to other institutions other than the University of Valladolid, and more than 90% belong to foreign institutions (from Europe, America, Africa and Asia). The members of the Editorial Board and the Advisory Board will be responsible for ensuring the achievement and maintenance of the quality level of TST.

TST does not charge any fee to the Author for sending or publishing his works. The articles and reviews published in TST can be included in thematic or institutional repositories from the moment of their publication, without any modification, always clearly indicating their origin.

Institutional affiliation

This journal is owned by the University of Valladolid (Spain), which provides its digital hosting and is responsible for its maintenance and management through Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (EdUVa) and the Servicio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid (STIC). The University of Valladolid guarantees open access to the contents of the journal. The works published in the journal will be included in the Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Valladolid, guaranteeing their long-term preservation.

Submissions and peer review process (double blind)

The articles must be sent to the editor of the journal through TST’s submission platform. The file format will be Microsoft Word. Articles in PDF or other formats cannot be accepted. The Editor will acknowledge receipt within ten days and will have the power to reject those texts that, due to their content or formal defects, do not conform to TST’s editorial standards. Rejected papers will be returned to the Author for eventual modification. All works must be original. The Editor will be responsible for assessing these issues, but his decision must be reported to the Editorial Board. Even after being approved by the evaluators, the publication of a text may be suspended if it is found that the text is not original or falsifies data.

The evaluation process is secret and double blind, so that neither the Author nor the reviewers know the identity of one or the other. To preserve anonymity, the Author is suggested to avoid quoting in the first person. For each article, two external experts from the corresponding area of knowledge, selected by the Editorial Board, will judge the advisability of its publication in the journal. Referees should evaluate the articles with one of the following classifications: accept, accept with some modifications, review and resubmit, or reject. Works with two positive reports will be sent to the Author so that they can make any corrections suggested by the evaluators. If there is a profound discrepancy in the assessment of the reviewers, the Editor may request a third evaluation, the result of which will be decisive. Referees can ask the Editor for a certificate attesting to his work.

From the acknowledgment of receipt until the moment in which a response is given to the Author, no more than four months should elapse. The Author will receive a brief e-mail from the Editor stating the reasons for the acceptance, the changes that would have to be made for publication, or their rejection, as well as the evaluators' reports. If the work is accepted with modifications, the Editor will assess whether the changes introduced in the original manuscript are acceptable. The Editor may re-send the corrected text to the reviewers, but their decision must be informed to the Editorial Board. The publication of the work will always be subject to the introduction of the indicated modifications. TST will publish in the last issue of each year the list of referees, and a statistic where the rejection rate of the articles received will be recorded.

Frequency

TST is published three times a year (January, March, and October). The January issue is thematic

Ethical Code of Conduct

The journal will conform to the code of ethics established in the Guide to Good Practices of Publications of Universidad de Valladolid, which adheres to the principles proposed by the Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE). This guide establishes the ethical way of proceeding by the Author, editorial committees and reviewers, whose content is summarized below:

  1. Author

The Author of the articles must undertake to carry out their research in an ethical and responsible manner, respecting current legislation and the aspects included in section 1 of the Guide to Good Practices of Publications of Universidad de Valladolid. Your works will be original and unpublished and will be duly attributed to those who have prepared them, avoiding plagiarism (misappropriation of works or ideas of others), self-plagiarism (using ideas or previous works of own authorship without citing the source) and the multiple or redundant publication of the same work. Clear reference will be made to the sources used, and invention, distortion or manipulation of the data used will be avoided. Failure to comply with these aspects may lead to the public disavowal of the articles, as explained in section 2.2 of the aforementioned guide.

Information from private conversations or discussions with other academics or scientists may not be used without your explicit permission. If images or graphics that are not their own authorship are included in the works, express permission must be obtained for their use and the authorship must be properly cited.

Papers that are under evaluation in other journals or publishers may not be submitted. Once submitted to TST, the originals may not be sent to another journal or publisher until the evaluation process is completed.

  1. Editorial Board

The members of the Editorial Board must ensure the quality of the publications, promoting good practices in research, trying to avoid malpractice, and trying to streamline the publication processes.

It is up to the Editorial Board to manage the evaluation process of the publications with fairness and impartiality, respecting the thoughts of those who have written the works and guaranteeing them the right to show their disagreement with the evaluation reports. Those who make up the Editorial Board must respect the confidentiality of the articles and their content until the moment of their publication and may not take advantage of the data of the works for their own research, unless they have the express permission of their Author.

The Editorial Board may consider the Author's refusal to allow his works to be evaluated by certain people, assessing whether the reasons alleged for this purpose are justified. However, the Editorial Board will be under no obligation to dispense the input of those referees

The Editorial Board will recognize the work of the reviewers who carry out the evaluation reports, issuing, where appropriate, the corresponding accreditations to those who have adequately fulfilled their work.

The Editorial Board must try to avoid malpractice in research (redundant publication, plagiarism or self-plagiarism, omission of cited sources, fabricated, distorted, manipulated, or used data without authorization). If it notices improper uses that affect a small part of the received manuscript, it will invite its Author to correct it, and will reject it if it affects a substantial part.

If the case that malpractices are discovered after the publication of the article, the Editorial Board will request clarifications from the Author, and, after evaluating the explanations provided, it will decide accordingly. If only part of the work results from malpractices, the issue can be resolved by posting an erratum. If the malpractices affect a substantial part of the article, it will be retracted and a public disavow is required, in accordance with the procedure described in section 2.2 of the Guide to Good Practices of Publications of Universidad de Valladolid.

Likewise, the editorial committee will try to resolve any possible conflicts of interest described in section 2.4 of the aforementioned guide.

  1. Referees

The evaluators should refrain from reviewing the works if they have or had any relationship with the Author, as explained in section 3 of the Guide to Good Practices of Publications of Universidad de Valladolid.

The work of the reviewers must be confidential, both during the evaluation process and after the eventual publication of the evaluated work. The referees may not use the content evaluated for their own personal benefit or that of other people, and must respect the opinions and intellectual position of those who have written the articles, judging the works objectively and impartially, adequately arguing their judgments, being respectful, constructively correcting possible errors and providing suggestions for improvement regarding the content, formal presentation, writing and bibliography used in the articles.

If they detect any type of malpractice in the reviewed works, those who carry out the evaluation must notify the Editorial Board of the journal so that it can adopt the adequate decision.

The referees must deliver their reports in the agreed time. If they cannot complete their task within the stipulated period, or if they do not consider themselves qualified to evaluate the work, they must notify the Editorial Board as soon as possible.

Good editorial practices in gender equality

The journal promotes gender equality, since the percentages of women and men involved in its management are equal. It also ensures that the percentages of evaluators of the works are balanced. The journal includes the full name of the authors of the works it publishes.

In accordance with the principle of gender equality, the journal uses inclusive and non-sexist language and encourages its use by authors. It recommends replacing the use of the generic masculine with non-discriminatory terms (such as collective nouns or gender-neutral adjectives), avoid expressions that perpetuate gender stereotypes and implement strategies aimed at favoring the most inclusive form of language. Authors are advised to follow the guidelines for the use of gender-inclusive language established by the United Nations.

When writing research works, authors must avoid gender biases whereby the masculine is used as a universal reference. They are advised to consult the European Union toolkit Gender in research and, where appropriate, provide information about the sex variable in research concerning persons, presenting the results disaggregated by sex.

DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and preservation of digital files

A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) will be assigned to articles published in the journal. With a view to their digital preservation, the articles will also be housed in the Institutional Repository of the University of Valladolid and in other databases (Dialnet) and will be archived by the Servicio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones de la Universidad de Valladolid (STIC).

Plagiarism Prevention Tool

TST has a plagiarism prevention tool provided by STIC.

Information policy on funding sources

If there is any type of public or private funding for the research that has given rise to the article, it must be declared when submitting it, filling in the corresponding section in the metadata box. In the case of multiple authorships, each author must declare all the information related to their sources of information, including the name of the financing entity, the identification number of the financing and the description of the role that the financing entity has played in the investigation. Once the article passes the evaluation, a call to a footnote will be included after its title in which it will be indicated if it has had any type of financing or has been carried out within the framework of a research project.

Interoperability protocol

The journal has an OAI-PMH interface (Open Archives Initiative - Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) that enables databases or information services to access the metadata of published works. Path to obtain the metadata: https://revistas.uva.es/index.php/tst/oai?verb=Identify
