Names and Symbols in «Marianela» of Benito Pérez Galdós
Abstract
In this paper analyzes the names attributed to the characters and the narrative spaces in Marianela, in order to probe the relationship between the name and its referent and the fundamental reasons for the plot. The onomastic choice made it is not the result of arbitrariness but responds to certain purposes. The names, the hypocoristics, the surnames, nicknames, etc. that are through all the pages of this little literary gem often indicate, by affinity or antiphrasis, the moral and the physical characteristics of characters, and represent the key of a world in which The author expresses his ideas, but also his doubts and his hopes.
