Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and the Cartas de los bachilleres
Abstract
Diego Hurtado de Mendoza is traditionally believed to have written two burlesque epistles: “Carta del Bachiller de Arcadia al Capitán Salazar” and “Respuesta of Capitán Salazar”. Nevertheless, this attribution has been widely discussed by Menéndez Pelayo, Lucas de Torre and René Foulché-Delbosc, among others. This paper focuses on the arguments, both against and in favour of such an attribution. It also analyses several aspects in these letters, such as humor, satire, language and the significance of Bachiller and Capitán as fictional characters.Downloads
