This article presents an analysis of El Cid, by José Luis Corral, based on its status as an historical novel and on the relationships established by the preceding Cidian texts, to show the most characteristic features of the medieval theme novel, metafiction and intertextuality. The final objective is to demonstrate that metafiction, intertextuality, and knowledge dissemination, are characteristic of the postmodern literary paradigm
