The synedochic polyacroasis in the poetry of César Vallejo

Abstract

This article analyzes three poems by the Peruvian writer César Vallejo: “III” (from Trilce), “Himno a los voluntarios de la República” (from España, aparta de mí este cáliz) and “Telúrica y magnética” (Poemas humanos), which correspond to three different moments of his literary production and his worldview. The hypothesis to be demonstrated is that, in these texts, there is a gradient through which one starts from an Andean family community towards an enlarged community that exceeds the national and human. For the analysis, we base on theoretical approaches about polyacroasis (Tomás Albaladejo), as well as embodied cognition (Victor Bermúdez and Friederike Foedtke) and the notion of community (Benedict Anderson and Zygmunt Bauman). In this sense, Vallejo’s poetry allows questioning the merely rational paradigm in order to access a heterogeneous and dialogic community where the body plays a fundamental role as motor of knowledge.

Author Biographies

  • Camilo Rubén Fernández-Cozman, University of Lima
    Professor at the University of Lima and the National University of San Marcos. He is president of the Latin American Association of Rhetoric. He is a member of the Antonio Cornejo Polar Center for Literary Studies, the International Society for the History of Rhetoric, and the Canadian Association of Hispanists. He serves on the scientific committee of the journals Castilla (University of Valladolid) and Tonos Digital (University of Murcia). He has published twenty books, including Rodolfo Hinostroza and the Poetry of the Sixties (2001), César Moro, a Cannibal of Culture? (2012), and Argumentative Techniques and Dialogical Utopia in the Poetry of César Vallejo (2014). He edits the literary journal Metáfora, indexed in Scopus. He has received numerous awards, most notably First Prize in the National University Book Competition (2003) and the Vallejo Siempre National Essay Prize (2014). He has been a lecturer in Madrid, Salamanca, Bordeaux, Rome, Siena, Florence, Rimini and Zurich, among other cities.
  • Sergio Antonio Luján Sandoval, National University of San Marcos
    A graduate in Literature from UNMSM and a member of the ESANDINO study group, he is an editorial assistant for the journal Metáfora and the author of reviews and articles in various print and digital publications, including Escritura y Pensamiento (Lima), Letras (Lima), Tonos Digital (Murcia), Latin American Literature Today (Oklahoma), and América Crítica (Cagliari). He has also published the book La representación de la poesía transcultural en Ande (1926) by Alejandro Peralta (2022) and translated El indigenismo de Orkopata and El pez de oro como obra al negro de la literatura peruana (2025). His research focuses on Peruvian avant-garde poetry and narrative. He currently works at the Casa de la Literatura Peruana and is a master's candidate at UNMSM, researching literature and animality.
  • Patricia María Zelaya-Icaza, University of Lima
    University professor and researcher. Currently a doctoral candidate at San Ignacio University, USA. Master's degree in Educational Quality Assessment and Accreditation from the National University of San Marcos. ISO 9001 auditor certified by the Catholic University of Peru and holds a diploma in Educational Quality: Management and Accreditation of Educational Institutions. Recognized for outstanding teaching performance at four universities in Lima. Diploma for outstanding performance as coordinator at the National University of San Marcos. Currently a professor and member of the Rhetoric, Literature, and Culture research group at the University of Lima and the Educational Quality group in the Faculty of Education at the National University of San Marcos. Extensive experience teaching Spanish language courses. Author of scientific articles and speaker at conferences. Results-oriented professional with strong analytical skills, excellent communication, and teamwork abilities.
