In this article I deal with the metaphorical engine as a component of a theoretical model of metaphor with cultural-rhetorical foundation. The metaphorical engine is studied in the dimension of production and in the dimension of reception, and it is explained as the core component of the theoretical model of metaphor since it provides the model with a dynamic equilibrium between the processes of creation and the processes of interpretation of metaphors. The role of cultural elements in the activation and working of the metaphorical engine is considered an asset for the construction of the cultural-rhetorical communicative code connecting authors and recipients in literary and rhetorical communication. The case of Cervantes’ character Preciosa and her tambourine as cultural foundations of a metaphor in García Lorca’s Romancero gitano is analysed
