Abstract

In recent decades, two debates have arisen around informal settlements and their relationship to vernacular architecture. The first revolves around whether such architecture and ensembles can be considered vernacular architecture. The second, more recent and practically silenced by the institutions, asks whether they can reach the category of cultural heritage. This paper aims to show that both debates do not depend so much on the epistemological consideration of informal settlements as on the previous conceptualization of vernacular architecture, and advocates the application of a cultural criterion that is fully consistent with our democratic and heritage principles.
