The importance of urban vitality

The main objective of this work is to bring urban vitality to a first line of debate in urban planning and design. This interest stems from the link between a vital living environment and social wellbeing, therefore being a relevant phenomenon for health. Based on this statement, this paper explains why vitality is important, which factors contribute to its disappearance and the conditions that promote and encourage it. This work also discusses how to approach the study of vitality, from an individual vision of the architect or designer to a general one we all have as members of a group or society. It studies in-depth the various view different urban agents adopt when understand the concept of vitality. Finally, this paper points out a possible path to study the phenomenon of vitality, combining different agents and actors in the city, through a transversal and multidisciplinary approach.
