To evaluate the importance of neighbourhood uses and local scale in everyday life and to contribute to the Compact City debate, this paper defines, measures and analyses proximity travel in Barcelona. Data were taken from the mobility surveys in Spain, which offers the depth required to identify journeys within neighbourhoods. These allowed analysing proximity dynamics, along with the frequency with which Barcelona residents rely on local scale in their daily mobility. During the final stage of the study, we evaluated the degree of proximity uses for defined areas similar to neighbourhoods, simultaneously testing the importance of density and income in local scale dynamics.
