The values of urbanity and mobility are being rethought all over the world. One of the answers to sustainability issues lies in the concept of proximity, which combines different dimensions of the urban proposals currently in use. They all point to a new urban paradigm that all creative cities wish to adopt in order to attract the knowledge economy, for it demands places rich in serendipity, the capacity of hosting chance encounters between diverse people. Also in the suburbs spaces and relationships between people are being reinvented, through the development of services and facilities hosting new functions related with shopping, leisure and culture. Metropolitan dynamics today thus must learn how to play with both distance and proximity to ensure a coherent reading of the very different nature of the vast territories being used in everyday life.
