Improving the sanitary conditions in the cities, providing affordable housing to the working class and arranging urban development -in brief, to build a city in a rational way- are the reformists objectives that the socialist policies of the town council of Grenoble took in the first decades of the twentieth century and which gave rise to the Garden-City Paul Mistral.
The biographical and ideological profiles and the political trajectories of the protagonists in the construction and gestation process (mainly due to Mistral and Salier) are proposed here as clues for explaining the process of development of this ambitious project.
