Lisbon. The river and the urban renovation. Expo 98. Catalyst of Lisbon rejuvenation

The present article is started with an analyse of Lisbon history. The increase of this city is identified with periods of great urban planned interventions, followed by longer or shorter periods of slow consolidation, organic development and blocked periods. It is done an analyse of the eighties situation from different aspects: demografic, economic, infrastructure and services, urban development, to explain the urgent necessity of intervention, consolidated with the Expo'98, project that prentends to modernize the city and beco me Lisbon into a 21st century city. The last part of the article is focused to study the meaning and the consecuences of the Expo'98 in Lisbon, being from a point of view qualitative the contribution to the social urbanistic balance of the city, and from a point of view quantitative the restoration of the project area and surroundings improving the infrastructure system and the quality of life.
