Beyond eviction: analysis of actions in precarious Roma settlements in Galicia according to the logic of rootedness

In the face of eviction-relocation policies since the end of the 19th century, improving without destroying has been a strategy of public action in marginalised neighbourhoods that strengthens their residents as political agents. Within the interventions according to the logic of rootedness in precarious settlements from Galicia, inhabited by the Roma population, three processes can be distinguished according to the neighbourhood agency considered: housing replacement, directed rehabilitation and assisted self-construction. Through the improvement actions in three Galician slums, the aim is to analyse their impacts in terms of environmental-constructive improvement, socio-community situation and neighbourhood consolidation, elucidating relevant components to design transformative urban policies.
