Unlike what happens to other territories after the crisis of 1640 and the separation between Spain and Portugal, Ceuta will continue to be faithful to Felipe IV. The causes and motivations for that fidelity, as well as the efforts of Madrid to defend and reward the city for its faithfulness, are analyzed in this article. The result of such policy will be the progressive “castellanización” of the city and an the increase of its strategic-defensive importance.
