Dubbing into English and perception of cultural humour in the reverse translation classroom

This proposal focuses on the reverse translation (Spanish-English) of humour based on stereotypes and cultural references, starting from a review of the existing literature to design an empirical study within the framework of a long-term research project. For this purpose, a group of undergraduate students from a Spanish university were involved and, on viewing a selection of video clips from the English dubbed version of the series Valeria (Netflix, 2020), they answered questions about the global perception of humorous excerpts and the identification of cultural references, as well as their preferences in terms of applicable translation techniques for the reverse translation of cross-cultural humour. The results show a strong preference for the preservation of cultural elements.
