Abstract

The episode of the Black Oppressor («Du Traws») of the Middle Welsh tale Chwedyl Iarlles y Ffynnawn («The Tale of the Lady of the Well») has been considered by many scholars as an addition, mostly because it follows the end of the main plot issue and it is weakly related to the rest of the story. This sequence is a re-elaboration of the Pesme Aventure episode of Chrétien de Troyes’ roman Yvain ou Le chevalier au lion, which presents a parallel story to that of the Welsh text. This study seeks to provide an interpretation of the rewriting of the Pesme Aventure episode by analysing the Middle Welsh tale as a translation and drawing on some analytical tools from Translation Studies and Narratology.
