In the present work we study the Roman institution of the patronage, taking as an example civic sponsorship the one exerted by the Mauritanian monarch Iuba II on the Hispanic city of Carthago Nova in Augustan times. Our analysis from an introduction about the origins and evolution of the institution, to continue with its introduction in the Hispanic provinces. Once this first part has been carried out, through an analysis of the corresponding primary and secondary sources, deepening in our case study, through an in-depth reading of the sources available for this episode, while proposing new interpretations following the previous contributions.
