This article analyzes the evolution of the Madrid’s Municipal Cleaning Service between 1892 and 1917, putting in relation to the urban and demographic growth experienced by the capital of Spain at that time. The research aims to contribute to the study of sanitary conditions within Spanish cities. In addition to the organization and the main characteristics of this essential urban service, the research focuses on the local authorities’ motivations to improve and modernize it, as well as the difficulties in achieving them.
