Solonino, Classicism, ancient quotesAbstract
In the 16th century, thanks to Classicism and a taste for ancient quotes, a new term started being used in Spanish, which was formed from the name of the Athenian legislator Solo. This term was Solonino. It went unnoticed for a very long time after first being employed, only to be later considered a fake. Afterwards, it appeared in the writings of some authors, sometimes explicitly censured, whilst in some others’ it was put forward as an alternative option; yet, on other occasions, it was simply applied to the name, as originally invented. This article firstly presents some examples of these uses taken from works written between the 16th and 20th centuries and, secondly, focuses on who invented the term, the reasons behind this invention, and on what they based their ideas.
