Tippert’s Opera King Priam: from Homeric Poetry to Musical Drama
Keywords:
Iliad, Greek Mythology, Classical Tradition, Opera, Michael TippettAbstract
Tippett’s opera King Priam (1962) is a good example of an operatic libretti of the 20th century based on a classical topic. The text, written by the composer himself, shows direct knowledge of the literary classic sources –on this occasion, the Iliad–, while giving, at the same time, rise to a rereading from those sources, by taking current approaches into account.
