Abstract

This article traces references to the Greek hero Caeneus, famous for his spear and for his metamorphosis. In a previous study, the author, concentrating on references to his spear, has examined evidence that Caeneus, well-known for his invulnerability, may have had an external soul. The present article investigates variant versions of his metamorphosis. The tendency to adapt unconventional ancient heroes gifted with peculiar qualities to the general profile of Classical mythology is also discussed.
