From Saint Jerome’s uerbum e uerbo to Justinian’s katà póda: the Translation of Law as a “Sacred” Text (a Curious Parallel)

The present study examines a curious parallel in the field of translation, namely the literalness (katà póda) required of the versions of the Codex by Justinian and that required by Saint Jerome for the translations of the Holy Scriptures (uerbum e uerbo). Consequently, the law issued by the emperor is regarded as a sacred text, which is why, when translating it into another language, one must respect not only its meaning, but even its form (the words themselves).
