The gnomai in Callirhoe as a Sign of the Narrator’s Omniscience and Interference
Keywords:
Greek Novel, Callirhoe, Maxims (gnomai)Abstract
This paper analyses the maxims (gnomai) in Chariton of Aphrodisias’ Callirhoe as resources for characterisation. It also highlights that most of them are expressed by the narrator. They must be considered, along with the other devices, such as summaries, anticipations and evaluations, as devices used to show the narrator’s omniscience and omnipresence in the plot.
