Repetition in Platonic Dialogue: Discourse Functions
Keywords:
repetition, platonic dialogue, discourse, discourse analysis, ancient GreekAbstract
This paper analyses repetition as a discourse phenomenon. It aims to describe the discourse functions of repetition in the Platonic dialogue (this is a corpus study based on Plato’s Republic). Some major functions are presented, including textual, argumentative and interactive uses, both dialogical (interpersonal) and monological (self-repetition). Various examples help to illustrate every functional category and some relevant passages are more extensively examined.
