Abstract

This paper sets forth the analysis of a rich, but not exhaustive, set of many figurative but yet conventional expressions in Spanish which take the human body as their conceptual and metaphorical ground. Unlike what is usual in previous contributions on this and similar topics, special heed has been paid not the motivation of isolated expressions but rather to the logic that underlies the body and its parts as the source of a system of coherent metaphors. This somatic logic is shown to be able to articulate to a considerable extent the conceptual organization of a number of notional domains of general use in everyday linguistic practice.
