The Parallel Spain of Santiago Abascal. Narrative Divergences in the 2019 General Elections

This article offers an analysis of the digital discourse produced by the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, during the period between April and November 2019, when this political force found parliamentary representation for the first time. Using a methodological approach that combines lexicometric discourse analysis and historical contextual analysis (Robin, 1973), we attempt to shed light on Abascal's attitude towards his main political adversaries. If in an article previously published and related to this electoral period (Renobell, 2021), digital discourse is seen in terms of the depersonalisation and unidirectionality of discourses, in this contribution we focus on semantic and rhetorical analysis. The questions we attempt to answer through an empirical approach to the texts are the following: What rhetorical characteristics does Abascal's discourse on Twitter possess? What semantic specificities does it have in comparison with other party leaders? How does Abascal construct his discursive ethos? What attitude does he show towards political adversaries? The analysis reveals widespread use of hyperbole, extensive use of synecdoche and highlights Santiago Abascal's construction of the discursive ethos in line with the party's patriotic mission.
