The future of Europe: What role for Archives?
Keywords:
Archives, Cultural property, European Archives Group, Historical Archives of the European UnionAbstract
Archives and other cultural assets have always represented an important challenge for the European Union. The Council of Ministers and the Commission have intervened several times to identify possible shared actions regarding European cultural heritage, in order to preserve and enhance them. The archives of both European and national institutions have been the subject of specific Community policies that, however, have not yet led to a shared approach. Through the analysis of European legislation and organization, the present paper aims to draw attention to the role that archives have in the future of Europe; specifically, the possibility of converging on a new shared ‘cultural policy’ thanks to the NextGenerationEU plan will be discussed.
