Abstract

This paper analyses two 19th-century English reworkings of Agustín Moreto's comedy El desdén, con el desdén, written by George Hyde and John Westland Marston: Love's Victory or The School for Pride and Donna Diana. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the richness of Moreto's influence in Europe, as well as the complexity of the intertextual networks woven around it over the centuries, as foreign rewriters turned to various previous versions of the play for the composition of their texts.

  • Míriam Martínez Gutiérrez, University of Burgos

She earned her PhD from the University of Burgos with the dissertation Teatro barroco español en Europa: la proyección de Agustín Moreto, which obtained the International Doctorate distinction, the highest grade, and the Extraordinary Doctoral Award. She also undertook research stays at the Centre d’Études Supérieures de la Renaissance (Université de Tours) and at the Università degli Studi di Firenze. As a lecturer, she has taught university-level courses on the use of theatre as a pedagogical resource in the classroom, on the relationship between literature and film, and on seventeenth-century literature. She has also worked as a temporary teacher of Spanish Language and Literature at upper secondary level (Bachillerato). Her research addresses Spanish Golden Age theatre from a comparative perspective, with particular interest in its European dissemination, as in the case of the playwright Agustín Moreto. She has also combined her philological and musical training (Professional Qualification in Piano) in interdisciplinary work on theatrical music. She is the editor of the critical edition of the hagiographic comedy Los siete durmientes, published by Reichenberger.
