Abstract

This article analyses the first English translations and adaptations of the work by Spanish writer Juan Valera: Pepita Jiménez, which is one of the most prominent costumbrist novels in 19th century. It studies the translation process in both the American and the British editions examining similarities and differences not only in layout and structure but also in the target text. The author itself supervised the edition process in some cases, being one of the first Spanish writers in negotiating his own projection in the English-speaking publishing market.
