A study of the English-to-Spanish translations published in the first issue of the second phase of the journal «Cántico»

Abstract

This paper centres on the first issue of the second phase of the journal Cántico, published in the spring of 1954, studying how it imported works from English literature. First, the literary criticism found in a landmark article is examined. Second, a total of four poems –by Dylan Thomas, Kathleen Raine, Lawrence Durrell and Nicholas Moore– and their English-to-Spanish translations by Marià Manent, are analysed. Third, inclusions of English literature found in the other issues are studied. Finally, the pioneering, international nature of the journal Cántico is asserted.
