The present work deals with the playwright and translator from Jaen, Joaquina Vera, whose literary career spanned the mid-1890s. She translated and adapted French plays, as well as an English novel by the prolific Victorian writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton: Leila, or the Siege of Granada (1838). This novel aroused the interest of Spanish intellectuals who, imbued with the proposals of Romanticism, were attracted to its double medieval and orientalist perspective. The analysis of Joaquina Vera’s version will be carried out by focusing on three main points: the paratext, the strategies used, and possible translation errors.
