Abstract

Aristides Quintilianus’ treatise On Music, datable II-IV A.D., quotes Homer as an authority regarding musical education, rhetoric figures and human soul. This article is a primary attempt to study the presence of Homer in the text On Music as an example of the appropiate use of rhetorical devices similarly to other writers such as Tryphon or Demetrius, and as material for an allegorical interpretation following not only Heraclitus but also Porphyrius. To conclude, it is stated that Aristides Quintilianus uses a similar text as that of Homer’s vulgata, as other authors in this period.
