This article analyses the sources of the myth of Meleager as represented in Greek texts, also examining the iconographical evidence. This study reveals several versions, and discusses difficulties in interpreting them. The diverse approaches or methodologies of previous scholars to the character of Meleager is subsequently outlined. It is the author's aim to refute some tendentious readings of the myth, and to demonstrate the advantages of combining different methods, especially that of philological analysis of the relevant texts, both inside and outside the Greek tradition, the details of which contribute to a fuller understanding of Meleager.
