Abstract

This study presents the results of the linguistic analysis of the method used to translate the Italian regionalisms in the Spanish translation of Giovanni Verga’s novel, La Lupa, one of his most important “verista” works. The grammatical and lexical choices made by the translator, Guillermo Fernández, create a new work that can be considered similar or not to the original text. This study therefore examines the way in which the Sicilianisms, sayings, and popular expressions employed by Verga have been translated into Spanish, demonstrating what has been retained and what has been changed in relation to the original text.
