This paper analyzes the neological processes collected in lexical availability works from both native Spanish speakers (Paredes, Guerra y Gómez, in preparation) and Spanish as a FL speakers (Gallego, 2014) in the region of Madrid. The results show that, although in both groups neologism is built upon the regular word-formation rules of Spanish, there are significant inter-group differences in the mechanisms they use and the roles neologism plays. Furthermore, the analysis of these processes in FL allows for a better understanding of how interlanguage works.
