Between 1900 and 1920 a strong interest in the couplet and vaudeville shows was developed in Spain. In their lyrics, sociopolitical criticism and erotic innuendo, besides the use of the female body for male viewers claim, were mixed. The combination of these elements led to a confrontation with the Catholic Church and conservative sectors of the country. In this paper we will check one of the answers offered by the religious institution to the mentioned shows. We will do it by studying the magazine La Lectura Dominical. It expressed ideas contrary to the air of freedom –or licentiousness, according to the Catholic ideology– that accompanied the couplet and vaudeville.
