This article analyses the theatrical work of the director and playwright José Luis Alonso de Santos with Lope de Vega’s classic play Peribáñez y el comendador de Ocaña, a play performed by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico in 2002. One can observe a contemporary ideological reading of the play, which is reflected in stage signs of the opposition between Peribáñez and the Commander, and the dramatic treatment of the traditional poetry of the text.
