Abstract

Esperando el diluvio (2022) presents many similarities with the novels starring Inspector Amaia Salazar by Dolores Redondo, which could represent a loss in recreating a credible atmosphere (Montaner, 2022; Geherin, 2008; Lutwack 1984) of Bilbao in the nineteen eighties. This work analyzes how studies on forensic criminology (Harrison and Wilson, 2013; Harrison, 2010; Cuquerella, 2004; Garrido, 2000; Ressler and Shachtman, 1992), on victimology (Walklate, 2018; Green and Pemberton, 2018; Minot , 2017; Rudman and Mescher) and on religion (Aosved and Long, 2006; Alarcón, 2005, Jonte-Pace and Parsons, 2002), among others, fit the time represented.

Author Biography

  • Emilio L. Ramón García, Universidad Católica de Valencia

Emilio Ramon´´ earned his PhD from the UNnversity of Texas at Austin and his MA from the University of Houston.  He has taught at the university level in the US (University of Houston, University of Texas at Austin and Siena College, NY) and in Spain (University of Alicante, CEU University-Elche, University of Deusto-Bilbao, CIEE Universidad de Alicante, UCV Valencia) and his teaching experience with American and European students includes all areas of Spanish Literature, Culture, Art and Cinema and, occasionally, some Latin American classes.

His main research interest is to see to what extent those with some kind of power affect and shape the lives of the weakest ones in society, both in the past and in current times. His publishing record shows an interest in sheding light on and giving voice to those who are generally considered a minority while exposing the clashes and frictions around them and to analyze to what extent globalization is affecting the way we look at things now. In our globalized society the future appears to consist in not looking back and heading toward an (economically) uniform society and, as a counter action for that, historical nationalisms as well as many other groups in Spain are re-thinking and re-writing History. For some scholars and analysts, this situation requires the re-interpretation and even the re-writing of History as a projection of economical and sociological politics shaped by the dominant class’s goals. When dealing with the present times, crime fiction plays the same exact role: to denounce the corruption of the powerful, to expose what really drives society and to inquiry about the inequities of society.
