Solitude, Identity and Means of (In)Communication in Volver a casa of Juan José Millás

The article analyses the role of means of communication (letters, radio, television and telephone) in the novel Volver a casa of Juan José Millás. The main thread of the plot follows the passage and exchange of identities between two identical twins. The reader sees himself confronted with a succession of usage of means of communication that reveal themselves to be crucial elements in the communication process of plot development, that maintains a balancing act between fiction and meta-fiction, as well as a process of construction and de-construction of the main character Juan. The means of communications, still analogue, typical of the last years of the pre-digital era, do not have only the purpose to make social communication possible but they also are used to hide deceit, create fear and harm the perception of the own identity. This problematic aspect of communication media covers a central part of this essay.
