Las Alcaldas, by María Gómez-Comino, is a play about the competition for political power that was based on Spain’s 2016 elections, with a Cervantine interlude serving as subtext. This paper analyses language strategies and character construction, taking into account different sources of current Spanish politics (e.g., discourses, publicity spots, and the news) and Cervantes’s language revival during the 21st century. Furthermore, the image of the television contest will be compared with Gómez-Comino’s staging; and interpreted through reflections about the ethics of democracy and power.
