The following paper reviews the novel La puerta entreabierta by Fernanda Kubbs focusing fundamentally on the new version of the automaton figure which has many precursors throughout the literary and cultural history. However, the new automaton figure that Fernanda Kubbs proposes presents some particular characteristics that partially distance it from the literary tradition to which it belongs. It might be said that this is a pretext to introduce a set of intertextual and cultural references in the argument recalling some of the most relevant predecessors (like Frankenstein or the chess player of Wolfgang von Kempelen) with an aesthetic purpose, in other words, to create a narrative environment with historical echoes which invit the reader to recognise them.
